Mission Statement
This Organization has been created to protect and preserve the Heritage of Thornapple Township and surrounding areas for the coming generations and to present this Heritage to the People of Our Community.
The Thornapple Heritage Association (THA) was founded in 1974 by a group of local citizens interested in promoting and preserving the history and heritage of Thornapple Township, the Village of Middleville and surrounding environs. One of the most successful events the organization was involved with in the past, was operating a temporary museum in the Baptist church and developing a walking tour of historic sites during the Middleville Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1984.
In addition, to carry out this mission we have engaged in the following activities:
Initiated the first annual Middleville Heritage Day 1992-3
Participation in Heritage Day activities with a booth and with a display. Also, having a parade float depicting an activity from the past, a slide show of scenes of old Middleville and environs, and a fashion show, of older clothing.
Collected for a future museum; artifacts, articles, memorabilia, papers, pictures and all that serves to save the past, for the future.
A photographic record of Middleville as it is in the years 1999-2000, for comparison with the past and future is currently being taken.
Publications such as the graduate book, note paper, coloring book, etc. to promote the area and raise money for our projects.
Education: Through presentations to the public, fourth grade students, eight grade students, clubs and organizations in the area by various members of our association.
The group paid for the filming of part of The Sun & News, that is kept at the high school library and the Michigan Library in Lansing. Also, filming a book of early village records owned by Delton Museum.
Research: The family history of Calvin Hill by member George Evans.
